Design shapes my world view, from my understanding of public transport to how I see human rights policy. The design mind, one might call it, it’s how mine functions. Most things exist in a multi-connected system, or systems, with links that we sometimes cannot easily see. Those connections are key for effective understanding and creating.
I see connecting dots as paramount. Not only in my work, but in life.
Apart from my design work I also act as an event producer. I have produced events at MinerĂŁo Stadium, Mangabeiras Park, O Mercado and concerts for artists like Pabllo Vittar, Elke Maravilha, Copacabana Club, GlĂłria Groove, JĂŁo, Alyssa Edwards, and Latrice Royale.
Which is just another type of design, where I think about multiple interactions and experiences. Delivering great experiences is what most excites me.
"His communication is great, offering detailed vision of the work in addition to his good articulation of the objectives."
"Presents very fluently and objectively, which makes it very easy to capture their ideas and arguments."
"Simplicity - By simplicity here, I mean clarity. It is easy to follow the work you share with us and the way the contents are organised."
"Always in search of their best version, Â never gets tired of learning and, consequently, never cease to teach us (even if it does not intend to do so)."
"Gui's arrival opened up a much more harmonious and productive communication channel, which has been very important for the project."
"(…) Very smart, super up-to-date in terms of the market and technology and extremely proactive — always looking to improve and develop professionally."
Nothing exists in a vacuum. No matter how specific or comprehensive, design should always consider the wider context. Culture, politics, economics, environment all play a role. An electric car doesn't exist isolated from public transport. Single point solutions aren't solutions at all.
What I don't know is as important as what I do to any design. Recognising what I lack is the first step in the pursuit for more information, for other perspectives. Focusing on what I don't know allows me more space for exploration.
Empathy can only take you so far. Designing with others will yield better outcomes than designing for others. Involving people from different backgrounds, specialities, is key even if is hard.
Softwares, workshops, techniques aren't as important as the reasons why we use them or what we do with them. A workshop shouldn't always be the default answer for solving something. What matter is what we want to achieve or solve. When answers aren't automatic we become free to find better solutions.
Question designs, decisions, results, the original question itself. Approach everything with a certain level of doubt and curiosity. Allowing space for doubt is allowing space for new information, new possibilities and perspectives.
Every problem has its root causes, finding and fixing them is the best way to achieve good results. Treating symptoms might lower pain points, but it won’t eliminate them. That’s only achieved by finding and fixing the underlying issue.
In other words: mass transit over any car, even electric ones. Public transportation is a passion of mine. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel, just use it better.
I’m all for a new solution, but only when they apply. And I never think one single thing is the end all be all for anything. A high-quality solution, innovation, can be flashy, but it need not be.
Being queer is a big part of who I am. It is one of the main pillars of my worldview. Being a mixed-race, albeit very light skin, Latin American is another. That experience informs my perceptions, crafts my opportunities, creates some challenges.
Intentional inclusion is a tool to bridge the gap prejudice has created, to give people what the world, unfairly, denies them. In the process, we achieve better results in every part of life, whether that’s better work or, more importantly, a better world.
There is no freedom, justice, without a shares responsibility. There is no healthy society without public healthcare, there is no educated society without education investment, there is no end to any prejudice without collective action.
We live our lives but never separated from that of others. Humans are, by nature, social beings and we’re only ever as good as those who have the least. It is all of our jobs to make sure “the leave” comprises every single human right.
